“The instructors are very patient here, and you don’t have to be embarrassed [if you don’t know something]… They are very willing to help you; you feel very comfortable asking questions.” – Shirley F., Digital Literacy Student

The Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center (formerly Midland Need to Read) staff, along with a devoted team of volunteers, is available to help you reach your literacy goals year-round. These goals may include learning English, improving your reading and writing, becoming a U.S. citizen, or increasing your proficiency with technology.

To become a student with Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Demonstrate a need for literacy (based on assessment) and desire to learn
  • Be willing to commit to at least 2 hours of instructional time per week
  • Show progress in meeting your goals

Instruction is provided in several ways:

Classes – Classes meet throughout the year at the Literacy House and are led by our staff and volunteer instructors.  Although classes consist of approximately 6-12 students, each student will benefit from individualized instruction, as well as a group atmosphere.

Small Group – This is a small discussion group, of approximately 3-4 students, that may meet at an approved offsite location.

Self-Paced – Self-paced learning is for those students who are unable to utilize any type of instruction we provide in-house based on personal or scheduling reasons, but who would still like to receive help to reach their goals. MN2R offers a variety of educational computer-based programming that allows our students to come into the Computer Lab during open lab times to do some work, or to work at their convenience from any location.

One-to-One Tutoring – A volunteer tutor is matched with a student based on the student’s needs. As a pair, they decide on a meeting schedule that best suites both of them.  Typically, the pair meets for one to two hours per week at a staff-approved location. Numerous community partners provide venues for these one-to-one meetings.

To become a Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center student and receive services, you must first enroll with us. This will help us give you everything you need to meet your goals.

All students must pay a yearly, nonrefundable $25 Materials and Technology Fee during their enrollment appointment.  This fee covers the cost of all classes (or tutor), any books or materials needed, and the use of the Literacy House Computer Lab.

Fees must be paid in person at the Literacy House, 1709 W. Wall Street, Midland, Texas.

A limited number of scholarships are available to those who qualify.
